From these data, it can be inferred that both local urban residents and migrant workers approve of what the migrant workers have done for the city, but their attitudes on the negative impacts to the city vary widely. We can also see that some local urban residents still hold an exclusive attitude toward migrant workers.

Systems of identification by local urban residents and migrant workers

Local urban residents and migrant workers have different opinions on the feasibility of different identification systems. Various practices have been used for identifying migrant workers; the local urban residents were most in favor of the temporary residence permit, followed by registration for house-renting, temporary residence, endowment insurance, medical insurance, with the transient study system allowing students to attend school outside their home district the most unwelcome. However, migrant workers were most in favor of the house-renting system, followed by the temporary residence permit. Half of the migrant workers approved of the temporary residence, endowment insurance, and medical insurance systems. As shown in Table 7.3 both local urban residents and migrant workers thought the most unreasonable system would be the transient study system, which has caused much controversy among both groups.

Correlation analysis of attitude, systems of identification, and social distance

Correlation between local urban residents’ attitudes and social distance

This section deals with two types of analysis, including an analysis of local urban residents’ attitude and subjective distance, and a relativity analysis of local urban residents’ attitude and interaction distance.

First, local urban residents’ attitudes and opinions of migrant workers will have an impact on the social distance between the two groups. The survey results show that there was a strong correlation between the subjective distance and local urban residents’ attitude toward migrant workers in the areas relating to contributions, traffic order, environment, and public order. However, as shown in Table 7.4 there was a weak correlation between subjective distance and the attitudes toward job occupation and restrictions to migrant workers.
